The Range at Christchurch Golf Club

Whether you are a beginner at golf or have been practicing for years, it is extremely important to train yourself for all skill types, especially when it comes to putting.

Improving your Putting

Putting can be the trickiest part of golf as it combines both precision, speed and patience to determine the success of your game. Here are a few tips on how you can improve your putting technique.

Master your Grip

This has got to be one of the most important factors of improving the performance of your golf putting. Without a proper grip on your club, you won’t be able to aim accurately and will risk negatively increasing your score.

Correcting this and using a better gripping method is the fastest way of becoming a better putter. Here are a few tips that you could use:

  • Place the handle of your club between the palm of your hands so that it runs through to your wrist
  • Both hands should be placed with thumbs pointing down the club, your right hand just slightly lower than your left

This technique provides more control and leads to more accurate results. The placement of your hands also allows the club face to rotate a lot less than if you were to grip more loosely.

The Ideal Swing Length

It is common habit to hit harder for long putts and softer for closer putts. However, this is not always the case and can result in missed shots. It is important to focus on distance control in order to determine the ideal swing length for each putt.

For long putts, you should maintain a longer swing back and through. Alternatively, for short putts, you will need a short swing back and through. Both should result in a smooth movement towards the target. Doing this will help you to approach each shot with a consistent temp and speed.

Wrist and Head Control

Flicking wrists is a common habit most golfers have found themselves doing at least once during a game. Not only can this action impact the speed of the club head, but where the face points as well.

As the golf ball relies solely on the touch and angle of the club from impact, flicking your wrist could affect where and how fast the ball travels.

To avoid this, you will need to keep the position of your wrists consistent the entire time you perform a putt.

Similar to this, it is important to keep your head as still as possible when putting. As soon as you move your head, your shoulders change position which will therefore impact the direction the putter is pointing. It is tempting to follow the ball and see whether or not is reaches the hole. However, you should instead focus only on the sound of the golf ball, until you hear some sort of impact.

Choose your own Target

No matter how far away from the hole you are putting from, it is a good idea to always aim for your own target, preferably a smaller object just behind the hole. Doing this means that you will have better focus and aim. Targeting something that is behind the hole will also increase the chances of you successfully putting the golf ball into the hole.

Practice Makes Perfect!

With most things in golf, practice really does many perfect. Whether you have equipment at home, regularly attend golf lessons or practice at a putting range, it is extremely important to spend time finding the best technique to improve your game.
